4. Background Information
Thimphu TechPark (TTP) is the flagship IT development in the Kingdom of Bhutan. It is the country’s first IT Park – promoted by the Department of Information Technology & Telecom, Ministry of Information & Communications, supported by the World Bank and developed jointly by Assetz Property Group (APG) of Singapore, a leading development management corporation focused on South Asia, and Druk Holdings & Investments (DHI), Bhutan. DHI assumed full ownership of Thimphu TechPark after its joint venture partner APG decided to exit from the partnership and transferred its shares to DHI in October 2014.
The project is located in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital and is being developed as a 250,000 square feet IT-focused mixed use development spread over 18 acres. The first phase of the project, which became operational from May 2012, is developed on 5 acres of land and comprises 58,000 square feet of IT office and data centre space. 10,000 square feet of space in Phase 1 has been absorbed by the Royal Government of Bhutan to establish Bhutan Innovation and Technology Centre which houses Bhutan’s first business incubation centre.
TTP harnesses the innate advantages of Bhutan – primarily the abundance of sustainable power in the country, resulting from the country’s unerring focus on conserving natural resources – to deliver a global standard facility which would rank amongst the best in the region. Work on TTP commenced in 2009 when Assetz and Druk Holding & Investments were awarded a contract by the Royal Government of Bhutan to design, build, finance and operate the TTP.
