Results of Business Idea Competition of Bhutan 2014

Business Idea Competition of Bhutan 2014, organized jointly by the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources and Bhutan Innovation and Technology Centre at Thimphu TechPark, received 82 business ideas. After the first stage of selection process, 32 ideas were shortlisted for face to face interview with the following four judges:

1.   Mr. Pema Wangchuk, Special Executive for Entrepreneurship and Education, Loden Foundation,

2.   Mr. Ram Bdr Gurung, Head, Entrepreneurship and Self-employment Division, MoLHR

3.   Ms. Payal Loungani, International Business Consultant

4.   Mr Tshering Cigay Dorji, COO, BITC/Thimphu TechPark.

Based on the total of marks given by the 4 judges, all ideas were ranked at the end of the interview. After that, the judges decided to award prizes and certificates to the proponents of the top 20 business ideas.

Business Idea Competition of Bhutan 2014

Ministry of Labour and Human Resources and Bhutan Innovation and Technology Centre (BITC), an initiative of the Department of IT & Telecom, MoIC, at Thimphu TechPark, are jointly conducting the third annual nationwide Business Idea Competition – Business Idea Competition of Bhutan 2014 -to promote creative innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.

The organizers hereby invite anyone having innovative business ideas and a desire to be an entrepreneur to send in their business ideas for the ‘Business Idea Competition of Bhutan 2014’ latest by Monday, 23 June 2014.

Selection Process:

In the first round, all submitted entries will be rigorously studied and analyzed by judges and then shortlisted.

In the final round, proponents of shortlisted entries will be interviewed face to face, or via Skype or phone call. The results will then be finalized, and certificates and prizes awarded in an Awards Ceremony tentatively scheduled to be held on 30 June 2014.

Incentives and Prizes:

1. Attractive prizes will be awarded to the top three entries including free incubation space for six months inside BITC. Laptops and netbooks were given as prizes last year.
2. In order to encourage women entrepreneurs, there will also be a prize for the best entry submitted by a female participant. She will also be given free incubation space of two workstations for six months inside BITC. This prize is sponsored by Ms Laurel Kilgour from the USA.
3. Select few entries will also receive certificates and free support from BITC to fine-tune and improve their business plans for further submission to existing entrepreneurship development programs in the country for support such as funding, mentoring etc.
4. Select few entries will be considered for incubation in the BITC incubator free of charge for the first six months.development programs in the country for support such as funding, mentoring etc.
4. Few creative and innovative business proposals may also be nominated for the regional and international business plan competition through Loden Foundation.

Arguably the best linux expert around in Bhutan, he has previously worked at Druknet, Bhutan Telecom’s ISP Division for five years as the System Administrator managing web, mail and domain name services mostly running on Linux and FreeBSD. Since moving to Data Centre Services in the beginning of 2012, he has been instrumental in setting it up and getting it running.

Notification to Business Idea Competition of Bhutan 2013 (BICOB 2013) Participants


On behalf of BITC and MoLHR, this is to thank all 72 participants of BICOB 2013 and update them that the first round of evaluation process is underway. The following are the list of activities we have planned for taking BICOB 2013 to a close:

20 June 2013: Forwarding of shortlisted entries to the judges for the second round. For this round, we will have two more judges from outside of BITC and MoLHR. Accordingly, shortlisted participants will be notified by mail. Please check your mail before noon on 20th June.

2.00 pm to 5.30 pm on 21 June 2013 (Firday): Entries shortlisted by the judges for final selection will be interviewed at 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm on 21st June. Those who live in Thimphu can come to MoLHR Office for the interview. Each participant will be interviewed for approximately 10 minutes face to face or via phone/skype. Judges will do the final evaluation based on your submitted entry plus the interview.

24th June 2013: Final prize winners and those who will receive certificate of merit will be notified by mail.

10.00 am on 27th June 2013 (Thursday): Awards Ceremony. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to final list of winning entries. It will be at 10.00 am at BITC, Thimphu TechPark, Babesa. All participants are welcome whether you are a winner or not. Tea and refreshments will be served after the ceremony. We will have young entrepreneurs speak at the ceremony about their entrepreneurial journeys besides the keynote speech by the chief guest. It will also give you chance to network with other entrepreneurs.
